Mold Remediation versus "Mold Removal" for your West Olive Home or Business

9/9/2021 (Permalink)

Mold-infested drywall Mold-infested drywall after a house fire.

Some restoration companies advertise "mold removal" and even guarantee to remove all mold.  This is a major misconception.  Since microscopic mold spores exist naturally almost everywhere, indoors and out, removing all mold from a home or business is impossible.

A qualified restoration company like SERVPRO of Holland/West Ottawa County understands the science behind mold and its growth.  Our technicians have the training and expertise to remediate the mold in your West Olive home or business.  Mold remediation focuses on getting mold levels back to normal/natural levels.

No mold damage is the same and they each require a unique solution, but the general process stays the same.

Step 1 - Emergency Contact: 616-396-8180

Step 2 - Inspection and Mold Damage Assessment

Step 3 - Mold Containment

Step 4 - Air Filtration

Step 5 - Removing Mold and Mold-Infested Materials

Step 6 - Cleaning Contents and Belongings

Step 7 - Restoration

Winter Weather Worries

11/27/2020 (Permalink)

Ice on hardwood floor The ice on the hardwood floor was caused by a burst pipe in freezing temperatures

Winter weather can bring more issues than just icy roads and sidewalks to shovel.  Living in Michigan we are at risk for frozen pipes, which can create a significant disaster to your home or business.

Frozen pipes occur when exposed to cold weather, such as those outside your house, or in areas such as attics, garages, basements, or kitchen cabinets.  A frozen pipe can burst at the point where the ice blockage inside the pipe is located, but typically the rupture is caused from the backflow of pressure between the water source and the blockage.

If winter weather casues water damage to your property or business, SERVPRO of Holland/W. Ottawa County is only a call away, (616) 396-8180!  Our IICRC Certified technicians have the knowledge, equipment and experience to restore your property "Like it never even happened."

Advanced Technology and Techniques

Major advancement has been seen in technology and techniques used in the restoration industry the past few decades.  These advancements allow SERVPRO of Holland/W. Ottawa County professionals to restore a property back to preloss condition quickly, reliably, and more effectively.

Moisture Detection and Measurement Equipment

Scientific drying principles rely upon specialized equipment to detect, measure and monitor moisture levels.

  • Infrared cameras can help detect water through a wall, ceiling, or floor making for a more thorough water removal.
  • Sensitive moisture detectors, hygrometers, and other meters measure the extent or moisture saturation.

Water Extraction Equipment

Powerful extraction equipment speeds the drying process by removing the majority of water from your property.

  • Submersible and gas-powered pumps for continuous pumping of high-level water.
  • Truck-mounted and portable extraction units efficiently remove water.

Drying Equipment

Industrial strength air movers and dehumidifiers are needed to remove the remaining moisture from ceiling, walls and floors.  Proper drying helps to prevent swelling and warping of floors, walls and furniture.

  • High-speed air movers prompt moisture to evaporate at a faster rate.
  • Industrial grade dehumidifiers pull the water vapor from the air.

Odor Removal and Deodorization

Water and fire damage often cause intense odors.  The machines we use remove airborne contaminants and control the air quality during the restoration and cleanup process.

  • Air scrubbers remove airborne particles and contaminants.
  • Thermal foggers and deodorization agents control odors.

Sanitizing Agents, Germicides, and Anti-Microbial Treatments

The use of OSHA-approved cleaning agents may be needed to clean and remove odors and/or contaminants on your property.

  • Deodorization products control odors from excessive moisture.
  • Disinfection products stop the growth of bacteria, fungi, mildew, and other harmful microorganisms.

Coronavirus Safety

3/13/2020 (Permalink)

The World Health Organization has officially declared the Coronavirus a pandemic. In light of this situation, we have developed specific steps to assist with managing the illness. Our crew can perform a proactive cleanup that involves facility or structure cleaning and disinfection where the customer states that there is no active known threat of COVID-19 contamination or exposure. The customer will be required to acknowledge that cleaning and disinfecting will only apply to the current state of the structure and contents. The structure would not be protected from future COVID-19 contamination if an infected person was to enter and occupy the building.

There are ways that you can personally help keep your household safe:

  • Clean hands at the door and at regular intervals
  • Create habits and reminders to avoid touching your face and cover coughs and sneezes
  • Disinfect surfaces like doorknobs, tables, and handrails regularly
  • Increase ventilation by opening windows or adjusting air conditioning
  • Limit interaction with other people
  • Limit attending large gatherings

Commercial facilities should focus on keeping these areas disinfected:

  • Kitchen/Food Areas
  • Bathrooms
  • Schools/Classrooms
  • Offices
  • Retail Spaces
  • Water Fountains
  • Shelving/Racks
  • Sales Counters
  • Carpets/Rugs
  • Handrails
  • Elevator Cars
  • Playground Equipment
  • Fitness Equipment

Do not hesitate to reach out if you have any questions or if we can help in any way.

Holiday Season Safety

11/18/2019 (Permalink)

The holidays are right around the corner, and that means that you are probably starting to put up some decorations. Although making your house look colorful and festive is fun, it comes along with its own set of dangers. Here are some ways to protect your family and home this holiday season:

  • Inspect electrical decorations for damage before use. Any damage can easily result in serious shock or fire.
  • Do not overload electrical outlets. Also, do not plug high-wattage appliances into power strips.
  • Never connect more than three strings of incandescent lights. More than that could blow a fuse and possible cause a fire.
  • Water your tree daily. Dry trees are a serious fire hazard.
  • Keep combustibles at least three feet from heat sources. A heat source too close to a decoration factor in half of home fires that began with decorations according to the NFPA.
  • Protect cords from damage.
  • Check decorations for certification label.
  • Stay in the kitchen when cooking. Unattended cooking equipment is the leading cause of home cooking fires according to the NFPA.
  • Turn off, unplug, and extinguish all decorations when going to sleep or leaving the house.

Follow these tips to help ensure that you have a safe holiday!

Preventing Frozen Pipes

11/4/2019 (Permalink)

Winter is approaching and that means that the possibility of experiencing a frozen pipe is on the rise. Each year, many homeowners in West Michigan fall victim to frozen pipes resulting in extensive water damage. The pipes that are the most at risk are those in unheated interior spaces such as basements, attics, and garages. Depending on how cold it gets, all pipes can be at risk of freezing. Here are some great tips to prevent frozen pipes:

- Purchase and apply pipe insulation.

- Open cabinets to allow warmer air to circulate around the plumbing.

- Let faucets drip. Running water helps prevent pipes from freezing.

- Keep the heat on at all times.

- Add insulation to attics, basements, and crawl spaces.

If you go away on a winter vacation, be sure to have somebody check in on your home regularly. A pipe break can happen at any moment and the longer it sits, the more damage is done. If you do experience a frozen pipe and do not know where it is or are unable to thaw it, call a licensed plumber.

Gutter Cleaning Tips

10/29/2019 (Permalink)

It is that time of the year again. Fall brings with it a variety of projects that need to get done. Those projects may include raking the yard, blowing out the underground sprinkling, winterizing the swimming pool, placing the plow sticks, and more. One project that should surely be on the list is cleaning your gutters. Having clean gutters heading into winter will help prevent your home from experiencing water damage from ice buildup. Here are some tips to get your gutters winter ready:

1. Safety first. Always make sure that you place the ladder on a sturdy surface. Ladders can easily shift on landscaping rocks and create a serious fall hazard.

2. Wear work clothes since cleaning gutters is a dirty job.

3. Use a small plastic scoop or shovel to remove debris from your gutters.

4. Spread a tarp underneath your workspace to collect the gun and protect your lawn and landscaping.

5. Once clean, use a garden hose to flush the gutters and downspouts of any remaining debris. This will also show you if you have any leaks.

6. Repair any portions of the gutters that are damaged.

This free service ensures that everything you need to know about your facility is at your fingertips. If you are interested in having one done for your facility, give us a call at:

Oh Christmas Tree

11/26/2018 (Permalink)

Christmas tree season is upon us!

Most people begin setting dates to shop for their tree shortly after Thanksgiving. The tree farms grow busier and busier, and you begin seeing trees on top of cars going down the road. The local supermarkets have shelves packed full of lights and holiday music is in the air.

Christmas trees, although festive and pretty, bring along some extreme dangers. It is not uncommon during the holiday season for families to experience Christmas tree fires. Here are some tips on how to avoid these disasters:

- Always re-cut the trunk at least one inch from the bottom and drill a hole in the middle to allow the tree to absorb water and stay healthy.

- Keep your tree away from heat sources. These can include space heaters, fireplaces, wood stoves, televisions, computer monitors, and more.

- Do not put too many strands of lights on your tree. The rule of thumb is a maximum of three plugs per extension cord.

- Always make sure your tree has water! A Christmas tree fire is much more likely when your tree is dry.

If you do experience a tree fire, we are here to help. Our highly trained technicians are not strangers to these kinds of situations. You can trust us to be there for you in your time of need.

West Michigan has received plenty of storms and heavy rain this summer. All of the flooding and high humidity has left homes and businesses in need of water extraction and drying. The severity of water damage to buildings throughout the summer have ranged from water pouring through windows and flooding basements, to small roof leaks. No matter the size, call SERVPRO of Holland/W. Ottawa Co. if you are unsure if you can successfully dry your home or business. Even the smallest amount of water or moisture can begin to produce mold. Mold has the ability to spread and generate serious health concerns if not remediated promptly. Our technicians are trained professionals with the knowledge and equipment needed to remediate your mold problem and ensure safety.
